How Lettuce Grow works

Starting your Lettuce Grow subscription begins with the Lettuce Grow Farmstand. The Farmstand is a self-watering, self-fertilizing planter that makes growing your own food simple and manageable. The Farmstand works for both indoor and outdoor growing, and it comes in a range of sizes that can house anywhere from 12 to 26 unique plants. The Farmstand uses 90% less water than an average home garden, making the time you have to devote to gardening and your environmental impact much smaller.

All you need to make sure your plants grow healthy in your Farmstand is an outlet, watering once a week, and either direct sunlight outdoors or Lettuce Grow Glow Rings indoors. The Farmstand is a little bit on the pricey side with the smallest Farmstand starting at $399, but it will last you a long time and will allow you to grow so many wonderful plants and vegetables that the cost is worth it. The Farmstand also comes with everything you need to set it up and keep your plants happy, namely a water pump, a power cord, grow cups, a timer, plant food for over a hundred plants, pH testing kit, and you’ll be rewarded even more with an endless bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs.

Once you have a Farmstand selected, it’s time to pick out your seedlings! This is the most exciting part of shopping the Lettuce Grow online store. These are ready, already sprouted plant seedlings. As someone who has tried and failed to have a backyard garden in the past, this way is so much better than simply trying to get unsprouted seeds to grow. Lettuce Grow will help you determine what types of plants will best suit your geographic climate; they offer a huge variety of seedlings from herbs to strawberries to leafy green kale. They currently offer five different seedling bundles that are pre-made or you can pick out your selection of seedlings if you prefer. There’s even a quiz to help you find the best plants for you!

The current bundles include the indoor favorite’s bundle (basil, bok choy, butter lettuce, strawberry, cherry tomato, and romaine lettuce), the salad lover’s bundle (arugula, butter lettuce, blue kale, greens mix, cherry tomato, and spinach), the best of spring bundle (basil, mini cucumber, muir summer lettuce, peppers, cherry tomato, and zucchini), the must have herbs bundle (cilantro, basil, green onion, parsley, spearmint, and thyme), and finally the lettuce bundle (baby lettuce mix, butter lettuce, muir summer lettuce, pomegranate crunch lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and romaine.)

The bundles are all $15 each and the individual seedlings are $2.50 a piece. Each seedling comes with information about how long they grow, where the best placement in the Farmstand is for them, what season the plant grows in, and how to harvest it. With all the seedling options available, there’s truly something for all vegetable, herb, or lettuce lovers out there.

Lettuce Grow’s Mission

Founded by Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik, Lettuce Grow is committed to sustainable eating. Industrialized big agriculture is harming our planet and our eating habits. Most grocery store food has been processed and sprayed with chemicals, but even more concerning 52% of produce is being wasted due to supply chain issues. Fresh, clean food is getting increasingly harder and more expensive. And the amount of power and water used to transport and grow food is detrimental to our planet. But with Lettuce Grow the food you grow will always be fresh and chemical free while having a positive impact on the environment.

One thing that I love about Lettuce Grow is their data. You can see here the positive impact Lettuce Grow has broken down into numbers. It’s a neat way to compare Lettuce Grow’s environmental impact to the much more harmful systems of big agriculture.

Growing Your Plants

Lettuce Grow provides a growing guide full of tips and advice for those of us who need some assistance caring for our plants. It makes being an expert gardener easy! There are lessons on how to set up your Farmstand, how to handle your seedlings, and much more.

The seedlings have a rich life cycle. They can mature as early as 3 weeks or as late as 3-4 months depending on the type of seedlings you’re growing. Consistently harvesting your plants is the best way to keep your Lettuce Grow garden healthy. You’ll see a little bit of growth during the first week after you plant your seedlings, and then in the following weeks that growth will multiply and amaze you.

The weekly care for your plants should only take about 5-10 minutes. You’ll refill the water in your Farmstand, add plant nutrients to keep your veggies and herbs happy, and test, and if needed, adjust the pH of your soil.  If you’re growing in a hotter climate, you might need to water a little more often.

There is also a handy and quick to install Lettuce Grow app to help you keep track of your plants and what they need to grow as well as letting you see what new kinds of seedlings Lettuce Grow is offering.

Recipes

Another thing that is really wonderful about Lettuce Grow is their recipes. On their website they have a whole page dedicated to delish recipes you can make with the plants you grow. Each recipe is pretty simple to make and has a difficulty rating so there’s great things to try out for beginner cooks and the more experienced. There is also a helpful graphic on each recipe telling you what seedlings feature as an ingredient. I know I want to try out their honey lime roasted carrots with cilantro and black sesame seeds.

FAQs

Where does Lettuce Grow ship to?

Currently, Lettuce Grow only ships to the US. But if you are international and interested in Lettuce Grow, you can fill out their international survey to let them know your interest.

What is the return policy?

The Farmstand has a 90 day money-back return policy, but is not accepted after that 90 day period. The same policy is also in place for the GlowRing, the Farmstand extensions, and the dolly. Seedlings do not have a return policy, however you can email Lettuce Grow if there is something wrong with them or if you have questions about the seedlings you purchased.

Can I use the Farmstand inside? Or is this only for outside plants?

You are more than welcome to grow indoors! Glow rings can make this easier and help make sure your plants get enough sun to thrive.

Can I grow seedlings in a very hot climate? Can I grow seedlings in a very cold climate?

Lettuce Grow is committed to making sure you can grow food no matter your climate, and there are tips and advice on their website to help you create the best setup for the climate you live in.

 Are Lettuce Grow seedlings organic?

All the seeds used by Lettuce Grow are non-GMO grown with organic growing practices. Lettuce Grow brands itself as “Beyond Organic” because they address more environmental concerns than typical “organic” foods.

What are the monthly costs of Lettuce Grow? How much can I expect to spend on my garden?

There are a number of factors at play here. The main things you will be spending money on to take care of your plants are the nutrients, pH Down, and water. The first six months worth of plant nutrients and pH Down come with the purchase of your Farmstand. After that you can expect to spend about $20 a month on these things if you have the smallest size of Farmstand, with that expected cost raising a small amount the larger setup you have.

Can I pay for a Farmstand with installments?

Yes, you can. Lettuce Grow uses Affirm to help you be able to pay at our own pace, and you can pay for a Farmstand for as little as $34 a month.

Can I still return items if I pay through installments?

Yes, you can still make returns on all items in the 90-day period except for seedlings.

How much water does the Farmstand hold?

The Farmstand tank holds 20 gallons which depending on the season will last your plants about 1-3 weeks. Lettuce Grow recommends topping off your water weekly to make sure your plants stay hydrated.

What is the Give-Back Program?

Lettuce Grow has started “Lettuce Give,” which is a program ensuring that for every ten Farmstands sold, one is given to a local school or a community organization.
